Significant Achievements and Activities

  • Co-Counsel with Attorney Karen Musalo in Abebe v. Gonzales, 432 F.3d 1037 (9th Cir., 2005), a case decided by eleven judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 2005. This case established the legal precedent that foreign-born parents of a U.S. citizen child may qualify for asylum if their child would be subjected to female genital mutilation in the parents' home country.

  • Author of the 1997-98 Edition of the Thomson West Publication Immigration Act of 1990 Handbook.

  • Update Editor since 1991 of The National Immigration Project's Immigration Law and Defense, a two-volume treatise published semi-annually by Reuters/Thomson West.

  • Drafted and testified in support of Oregon Revised Statute 135.385(2)(d), a law which requires that judges advise criminal defendants of the potential immigration consequences of pleading guilty.

  • Rated "AV" since 1997 by Martindale Hubbell Lawyer Directory, its highest rating for attorney competency and ethics.
